FamilySearch
This site, maintained by the Church
of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, gives you access to some of
the Mormon genealogy files. It allows you to research the Ancestral File,
International Genealogical Index, the Family History Library catalog and
the Pedigree Resource File. Be cautious; the information in some of the
files, especially the Ancestral File, is sometimes incorrect.
National
Archives and Records Administration
Provides a comprehensive guide to
one of the great treasure troves of U.S. genealogical information. There
are very few searchable records online, but the site will help you identify
what records the Archives holds, whether they would helpful to your
research and where to find them.
The
GenWeb Project sites
Indiana
GenWeb
There's a GenWeb site for each state,
divided up by counties. What's available at each county site may vary
some from place to place, but most should have a queries list (that
you can submit to free of charge), a surnames list and a list of some
of the basic county resources available in the area. You can log into
the Indiana site by itself or log into the U.S. site, which contains
a link to each state site.
Roots
Web
This site features several searchable
lists, the most important of which is the Roots Surname List. It allows
genealogists to make contact with others researching the same surnames
as they are. The surname list gives some brief details on time and place
and provides contact information, usually an email address.
Ellis
Island Records
Allows you to search the transcribed ships' manifests from
all the ships that passed through Ellis Island (1892-1924).
To view passenger information, you must have a site membership
(which is free).
Ancestry
Ancestry, originally a publisher
of genealogy books, has developed one of the premier genealogy Web sites.
There are several searchable indexes for free, including Ancestry's
World Tree (which features user-submitted family trees) and an excellent
Web-based version of the Social Security Death Benefits Index. There
are also several for-pay databases available.
Kentucky
Vital Records Index
This is the sort of database that
everyone wants to find more of. Contains indexes to Kentucky Deaths
Records (1911-1992), Kentucky Divorces (1973-1993), and Kentucky marriages
(1973-1993). With indexes like this, it really IS easier to do it all
at home.
Ohio
Death certificate index
This index, created by the Ohio State
Historical Society, allows you to search a list of death records held
by the Ohio Vital Records office for the years 1913-1937. Minimal information
is available, but it will help you determine death date and location.
Lycos
PeopleFinder Switchboard
Looking for living friends and relatives?
These sites tap you into nationwide (and worldwide) phone directories which
allow you to search for a person in all 50 states at one shot.
Cyndi's
list of genealogy sites on the Internet
Unless your interest is genealogy
on Mars, you should be able to find something here. Cyndi offers links
to more than 100,000 Web sites, some of which are really databases you
can search.
World
GenWeb
This site is modeled on the U.S.
GenWeb sites. Its goal is to offer a genealogy Web site for each country
in the world. It is a mixed bag of some very good sites (Germany and the
British Isles), some sites just starting up and some orphan countries.
Don't be surprised if the site you are browsing is not in English or is
bilingual.
Public
Record Locator
A wonderful site containing links
to public information databases worldwide. Most of the databases are free.
Find a Grave
Search 41 million grave records and find the famous, the infamous, and the ordinary--frequently with gravestone pictures. Gen
Forum
This site, a subsidiary of FamilyTreemaker's
Web site, provides online forums for thousands of surnames and allows users
to post queries to them.
Castle
Garden
Most Americans have heard of Ellis Island and assume their ancestors
came through this famous immigration center. However, before Ellis Island,
which opened in 1892, there was Castle Garden. This very good database
offers transcriptions of immigrant ships' manifests from 1820-1892 and
allows you to search for your ancestor by name.
www.surnameweb.org
This site allows you to search a surname for country of origin and (sometimes)
a name meaning. It also has links to pages with family trees and database
hits.
